The Rider-Waite Tarot deck

Tarot, Astrology and Numerology Connections

Almost a triad, Astrology, Numerology and Tarot when read together with the connections understood, can give a full and powerful picture. Although each subject is its own discipline, there are definite links between Tarot, Astrology and Numerology.

The Smith-Waite Tarot deck is the gold standard when it comes to card divination. The creation of Arthur Edward Waite, a mystic and spiritual truth seeker, in collaboration with Pamela Colman-Smith. Arthur authored and published A Handbook of Cartomancy, Fortune-Telling and Occult Divination that showcases his spiritual understanding and psychic abilities.

Throughout the tarot deck, each card is numbered, each suit having an association with a specific astrological sign and therefore, the planet that rules the sign.

Using the Smith-Waite Tarot deck, illustrated by Pamela Colman-Smith, number vibration is clearly shown in both the minor and major arcana of the tarot and in the properties of each planet. The Smith-Waite deck was created by Arthur Edward Waite.

Wise and highly knowledgeable, the High Priestess in the major arcana sits on her throne comfortable in her own connection to her soul, her inner guidance and intuition. She carries the air of mystery attributed to those who, even though grounded and self reliant, are deeply connected to the voice of their soul. This card carries the number vibration of 2.

The Fool and the Magician of the major arcana correspond to the numbers 0 and 1 respectively. The Fool is the beginning, the trust of taking a risk, stepping forward into the new without being able to see the future, skipping happily off while looking up to the skies, carrying the bare necessities and putting one foot in front of the other. Here we see the Fool stepping off the cliff and trusting he will soar.

In the Smith-Waite deck, the sun is shown clearly shining down at the back of the Fool, even though the sun is associated with the number 1 and in the tarot, the number one of the major arcana is actually the Magician. In the Fool the sun is warmly shining down, almost giving the Fool the courage to keep venturing forward. The sun is at the back of the Fool, as if to shine a light on the pathway ahead as the Fool continues on his merry way, before moving onto the number one of the Magician, the next phase.

The Magician stands strong, holding his wand high, self assured in his innate capabilities with all the tools of the trade laid out on the table before him – chalice, coin, sword – he is well equipped to create, transform and manifest.

Each ace of the minor arcana is a number 1, the Ace of Cups, Ace of Swords, Ace of Wands and Ace of Pentacles. The symbolism of these aces ties in nicely with number vibration – new beginnings, with each of the suits showing the area for the new beginning.

Boldness, courage, initiative and new beginnings are the overwhelming qualities of each ace, regardless of the suit, even the softness of the cup shows a strong, confident hand holding the cup and allowing the water to flow down into the pool of emotion, or is that consciousness…below.

Aligned with the fire of the sun, ruler of the sign of Leo in astrology, the number one is bold and daring, taking hold, showing initiative and pushing forward. And in keeping with the vibrational colour of boldness, the colour is flame red, reflected in the robe of the Magician. the Fool may not be wearing red but the feature colour of his outfit is deep rust, rust that will evolve into red as he walks forward taking those first bold, brave steps into the new.

The steely strength of the Ace of Swords, the new shoots of growth shown by the Ace of Wands, the abundance brought forth from spirit of the Ace of Pentacles and the gentle emotion of new love of the Ace of Cups – new life is shown with every ace. Beautifully aligned with the vibration of the number 1 in Numerology.
